Selecting a project paper supervisor

One of the most important decisions an undergraduate student has to make is "supervisor selection". It is a "difficult" and "time-consuming" decision because agreement from both parties (supervisor and student) are needed. It is however worth putting in effort and time in the decision as the working relationships between the student and supervisor is quite long, about a year or 2 semesters,  long enough to drive any party CRAZY!

The lecturers might have some criteria in mind as to the quality of students he/she comfortable to supervise (e.g. first come first serve basis, research title within certain area, hard-working, good writing skill, reliable, honest, able to meet deadline, responsible, humble .....). On the other hand, the students might also have some criteria in mind as to what makes a Good Supervisor (e.g. lenient, guide them hand-in-hand, shows examples, patience, supportive, friendly, always have time for students, knowledgeable, ........). How to align the expectations? Key success factor for any relationship to work is OPEN COMMUNICATION.

If both parties are able to articulate their expectations effectively to other party, and open-minded about new ideas or suggestions, or the ways things should be done, the relationship will be a satisfying one that last forever....

To students who are not accepted by your nominated supervisor, please do not feel offended or sad! The lecturer probably is being nominated by more students than he/she can handle :)
